Useful information for prospective and current graduate students:
Graduate research training at UCSF in basic biological and biomedical sciences is organized interdepartmentally, primarily through two major research/training consortia: the Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS) and the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Program. Graduate study in these programs is aimed at students intending to earn a Ph.D.

• THE PROGRAM IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (PIBS) offers training in eight programmatic areas leading to a Ph.D. in each: Biochemistry and Molecular Biology , Biophysics , Cell Biology , Chemistry and Chemical Biology , Developmental Biology , Genetics, Neuroscience
• THE BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES GRADUATE PROGRAM (BMS) offers training leading to the Ph.D.  with an emphasis on disease-related research organized around four research foci: Genetics, Reproduction and Development, Infection and Immunity, Cancer, Growth Control and Signal Transduction, Tissue and Organ Biology.
